Subject: Free Friday Parking Program in Downtown Mansfield

Mansfield, OH—Mayor Tim Theaker is announcing that the Free Friday parking program which was established in the summer of 2011 is being suspended for the city of Mansfield effective July 12, 2013. The original intent of the Free Friday parking program was to bring visitors to the downtown area for shopping and to bring increased traffic to local businesses. We have now observed, and are getting many complaints, that those visiting can no longer locate ample parking due to cars being parked at meters all day. In addition, the visitors were still putting money in the meters on Friday which indicates that Free Friday parking is only working for employees of downtown businesses. This defeats the purpose and therefore is the reason for discontinuing the program. This will allow our local businesses to again enjoy the patrons that desire to shop in the downtown area while allowing shoppers more opportunities to park in our downtown area.

Mayor Theaker advises that the Free Friday Parking programs could be reinstated if warranted with the full intent of benefitting our downtown merchants.
