Safety Town THE IMPACT OF THE SAFETY TOWN PROGRAM Since its inception in 1937, over 35,000 Mansfield children have participated in Safety Town. Currently, about 350 additional youngsters complete the course each year. Over 1000 communities in the United States have set up Safety Town programs based on Mansfield’s lead. Nationally, approximately 120,000 children attend Safety Town programs every year. In addition, requests for information about setting up a Safety Town program have come from San Juan, Puerto Rico; Mansfield, England; Toronto, Ontario; and New Brunswick Providence, Canada.
The Mansfield Police Department oversees Safety Town’s operation. Funding over the years has come from numerous local businesses, service clubs, and individuals. Last year, over 100 business and service clubs donated money to fund the program, many of them long-time contributors whose donations and in kind services has added significantly to the program’s success. The generous support from businesses and service clubs has kept costs for operating the program to a minimum. Relying on ingenuity and private support, Mansfield’s Safety Town has proven that federal and state tax monies and the associated “red tape” and record-keeping that usually accompany the use of public grant funds are unnecessary for instituting and conducting a successful pre-school safety program at the local level. Mansfielders are very proud of their Safety Town Program. A pride shown in the widespread support it receives every year from parents, volunteers, public safety forces, school administrators, service clubs, businesses and individuals. As a well established and respected community service program in
Mansfield, Safety Town receives wide support from all sectors of the community.
Indeed, many parents, as they send their own children to Safety Town, recall with fondness
their experiences when they first learned about safety principles in the program years
ago. The continuity afforded by the program's success and the value of simple,
easy-to-understand lessons so appreciated by parents, provide an ongoing enthusiasm within
the community for keeping the program in operation.
